Twitter Like Wire Telegraphs?

My dad had a stroke about three years ago, but he's still pretty opinionated about things and when he is interested in a topic he says it in total and complete clarity. A few months ago he brought up Twitter and said that he didn't understand the need for it. Well today, my father in his ultimate hilarity compared Twitter to wire telegraphs.

Citing that King Solomon in Ecclesiastes said that there was nothing new under the sun, he made the connection that wire telegraphs were the Twitter of their time. Yes, electrical telegraphs where morse code was transmitted over wiring to send messages (to my dad) is like Twitter. I wonder if smoke signals were the original Twitter/text message?

Either way, I guess I see what he's saying. We have phones, radios, then we get TVs and think that we're advancing. But are we really? Who knows? I'm going to post this in my Twitter feed and see what happens. As opposed to a wire telegraph, people will see it and be able to read my post instantaneously. I guess we really are advancing. Kind of.
